What type of character will my reclaimed flooring have?

Reclaimed wood flooring is prized for its natural character and one-of-a-kind appearance. Because the wood was originally used in historic structures—such as barns, factories, mills, or warehouses—each plank carries visual details that simply can’t be replicated in new wood.

Typical characteristics may include:

  • Natural color variation from years of aging, oxidation, and exposure to the elements
  • Knots and mineral streaks, ranging from subtle to pronounced
  • Surface texture such as saw marks, light wear, or hand-hewn details, depending on the product
  • Nail holes or checking, which add authenticity and tell the story of the wood’s past
  • Grain variation, from straight and tight to bold, swirling patterns

No two floors are ever exactly alike. Some projects lean more rustic with heavier character, while others offer a cleaner, more refined look with just subtle signs of age. Natural variation, nail holes and other character are not considered defects—it’s what gives reclaimed flooring its warmth, depth, and timeless appeal.

If you’re unsure how much character is right for your space, reviewing samples or project photos is the best way to set expectations and find the look that fits your style.
