Why choose an Appalachian Custom Reclaimed Chestnut Floating Shelf & Mantel?

Designed for spaces that demand authentic historical character, this collection celebrates the legacy of a virtually extinct American hardwood. Each piece is responsibly salvaged from century-old Appalachian barns and agricultural structures, showcasing the distinct insect-markings, rich patina, and tight grain unique to authentic wormy Chestnut.

Milled to clean-edged perfection by our Virginia workshop crew, this engineered box-beam delivers a heavy, commanding presence on the wall while maintaining a tailored, geometric precision and lightweight installation. Its natural, warm tones catch interior light beautifully, bringing historical gravity to both rustic and crisp architectural lines.

The Signature Chestnut collection offers high-end designers, architects, and homeowners the ultimate union of American heritage and structural permanence—functioning flawlessly as a statement fireplace mantel or a seamless, heavy-duty floating shelf centerpiece.

  • Dimensions: Available in lengths from 48″ to 84″, with customizable Face Profiles and Depths to suit your specific architectural needs.
  • Weight:
Our hollow box-beam construction gives you the substantial look of a solid timber beam without the back-breaking weight, making secure installation much easier.
For our Antique Chestnut mantels, the average weight is 3.8 lbs per linear foot.
Depending on the specific face height and depth you select, your mantel’s weight will range from a highly manageable 2.6 lbs/ft (for our sleekest profiles) up to 5.2 lbs/ft (for our boldest designs).
  • Material: 100% Authentic Antique Reclaimed American Chestnut (featuring distinct “wormy” character, prior nail holes, and natural oxidation).
  • Location: Milled in our Staunton, Virginia woodworking shop.
  • Mounting: Hidden heavy-duty mounting cleat system included.
  • Finish: 0% VOC Premium Finish by Rubio MONOCOAT.
  • Lead Time: Custom fabrication timeline of 3-4 weeks.

Yes, absolutely. Because our Signature Collection is engineered using a lightweight, hollow box-beam construction, it is ideal for use as a heavy-duty floating bookshelf. Unlike a solid slab of timber that puts immense dead-weight strain on your wall, our precision-milled design drastically reduces the shelf’s starting weight. When properly anchored directly into standard 16-inch wall studs, these shelves can safely support approximately 45 to 50 pounds per anchored stud, giving standard lengths a total weight capacity of 100 to 150 pounds. Furthermore, our locking miter joint construction ensures the wood naturally accommodates seasonal humidity changes without warping or sagging under the weight of your books.

You can install our floating mantel securely by attaching the included heavy-duty wooden cleat directly to your wall studs, then sliding the hollow box-beam mantel flush over it. Every custom mantel we craft features this integrated hidden mounting system for incredible structural support with zero visible hardware.

Note: Because wall compositions vary drastically from project to project (drywall, brick, natural stone, tile), we do not include the lag bolts or masonry screws. Please consult your builder to select the appropriate heavy-duty fasteners for your specific wall type.

National fire safety codes (such as NFPA 211) generally require a specific ratio of vertical clearance for every inch a combustible wood mantel protrudes from the wall. While our custom mantels are crafted to the highest structural standards, you must adhere to these minimum clearances above a fireplace opening.

Important: Because local building codes and specific fireplace insert requirements vary significantly, you must consult your local building inspector and your specific fireplace manufacturer’s manual to ensure proper clearances and code compliance prior to installation.

Our custom mantels require a 3 to 4 week fabrication lead time, followed by secure transit via standard ground carriers (UPS). Because your mantel is entirely bespoke and crafted to your exact specifications in our Virginia shop, we take the time to ensure it meets our exacting standards.

Once your piece passes our final shop inspection, it is carefully crated to protect the finish during transit. Oversized architectural lengths (typically 100″ and above) may require specialized LTL Freight delivery. You will receive complete tracking information and delivery instructions the moment your mantel leaves our workshop.

The mantel is stunning. A number of contractors have stopped by just to look at it on our stone fireplace.. Even an architect stopped by to see it – thanks so much!

THE CURATOR'S DESK

Custom Wood Mantels, Architectural Presence.

The American Chestnut was effectively wiped out by blight in the early 1900s, making reclaimed chestnut wood one of the rarest and most historically significant materials we mill. When I designed this custom chestnut floating shelf and mantel, I wanted to preserve the striking ‘wormy’ characteristics and rich honey-brown patina of this extinct timber while adapting it for modern spaces. By utilizing a precise hollow box-beam construction, you get the commanding presence of an antique chestnut mantel, but at a fraction of the weight. It is quite literally a piece of American history, engineered to mount effortlessly.
