Custom stair parts to complement your flooring

Getting custom stair parts to match your flooring can really tie your whole project together. Here is a diagram that gives you the names of the different stair parts. You can click to enlarge the photo.

Standard Tread Profile

We have standard width and thickness for our treads, but since every project is different, we can vary this based on your needs. Standard thickness is 1-1/16″ and standard width is 11-1/4″.

Here is the typical information we need to make your treads:

  • Quantity
  • Length
The length of the tread is usually determined by the overall length, including returns. For treads with returns on both edges, you can either give us the overall length or just the length of the throat (distance between the returns). The side of the return (RH or LH) is determined as you face the staircase from the bottom, looking up the stairs.
  • Whether they have returns or not. Returns are the finished edge for an end of the tread that will be exposed. Standard returns are 16″ long.

The front edge of the tread and the returns all have a rounded nosing as you can see from the profile photo on the left.

Here you can see some gorgeous custom stair treads that we made. We made these as standard treads and the angles were cut on site due to the precise cuts needed for this circular staircase.

Here is a photo of some of our Antique Beam Sawn Oak stair treads. If you click the photo to enlarge it, you will see the returns on the LH side of the treads. The side of the the return is always determined as you go up the staircase.

Landing Tread

We also make landing tread (nosing) to go at the top of your staircase. The backside is 3/4″ to butt up to the flooring and the front edge is 1-1/16″ to match your treads. Landing treads can also be used along the edges of open balconies and other areas where it would just show the exposed edge of the flooring.

Other related parts we can make include:
