Appalachian Strength, Curated Character
Harvested from the high altitudes of the Appalachian Mountain Region, our Rustic Hickory embraces the bold, unrefined essence of natural timber. We purposefully grade each board to display its most “honest” characteristics—such as vivid color variations, solid knots, and rich mineral streaking—all within the generous proportions of contemporary wide-plank milling. This line strikes the perfect equilibrium between exact manufacturing and untamed organic soul, rooting your interior in the rugged, lasting spirit of the woodlands.
Defining the Character
Mineral Streaks & Tonal Depth
Rooted in mineral-rich Appalachian soil, this Hickory develops incredible tonal depth, shifting effortlessly from warm, pale hues to dark, dramatic shadows. As these organic mineral streaks flow through the wood’s dense grain patterns, they produce a stunning, multi-dimensional aesthetic. It provides a level of refined, natural contrast that mass-produced finishes simply cannot achieve.
Dynamic Grain Patterns & Swirls
Known for its fierce, sweeping grain, rustic hickory brings dynamic energy directly to your floors. These wild, undulating lines and natural swirls map out the tree’s lifetime of growth. We celebrate this complex grain structure, turning every plank into a unique display of untamed, organic artistry.
SOUND KNOTS & NATURAL VOIDS
Knots are the living record of a tree’s branches. To ensure unwavering strength, we specifically grade for “sound” knots that remain tightly bound within the wood. By purposefully leaving a mix of these solid knots alongside the occasional natural void, we infuse the planks with a rich, organic rhythm—the true defining trait of premium Appalachian hardwood.
Solid Stress Cracks
These natural stress cracks, known in the industry as “vertical surface checking,” are signature details of premium, high-character hickory. We carefully ensure each board remains structurally solid while purposefully preserving these authentic fissures. Leaving them intact brings a compelling layer of grit to your space, beautifully illustrating the wood’s journey as a naturally cured, living element.

DRAWING NO: AW-2026
How long does it take to mill a custom Hickory floor?
Because we are a custom mill and not a warehouse, every floor is produced to order. Our typical lead time for Rustic Hickory is 4 to 6 weeks. For exceptionally wide planks or large-scale commercial orders, we recommend contacting the mill early in your design phase to secure a spot on our production schedule.
Why is Rustic Hickory flooring priced as a range rather than a fixed cost?
Because we do not sell mass-produced commodities. Every Appalachian Woods floor is a custom commission, milled specifically from premium Appalachian Mountain Region timber for your project. A fixed price assumes a one-size-fits-all product, but your floor’s final cost is determined by your exact architectural requirements. Your dedicated quote will be based on four specific variables:
Project Scale & Manufacturing Efficiency: Every custom floor requires dedicated mill setup and precise calibration. Larger square footages allow us to run the mill at peak efficiency, which often allows us to apply favorable volume-based pricing to substantial orders.
Width Specifications: We offer standard widths from 5″ to 12″, but your choice of specific widths or our massive 12″ to 18″ “butt joint” planks impacts the sourcing and production time of the raw lumber.
Milling & Edge Profiles: Our standard precision Tongue & Groove profile carries a different production time than custom hand scraped profiles or specialized architectural details.
Character Density: We specifically grade this floor to feature frequent sound knots, mineral streaks, and organic character. Customizing the intensity of these features for a specific design intent may influence the final project quote.
How much color variation should I expect in a "Rustic" grade?
You should expect a sophisticated, natural palette ranging from darker brown heartwood to lighter tan sapwood as well as darker, cascading mineral streaks. Unlike mass-produced flooring that uses stains to hide the wood’s nature, our Rustic Hickory celebrates the “Appalachian Vitality” of the forest. This results in a floor with deep tonal rhythm and varied grain patterns that add a multi-dimensional feel to any room.
Will the knots and surface checking catch on socks or splinter?
Despite its “Rustic” name, this floor is milled for high-end residential performance. We specifically grade for “sound” knots that are structurally integrated into the plank. While the floor features natural textures like surface checking and mineral streaks, the on-site finishing process—specifically a light “screening” or sanding—ensures the surface is smooth and safe for barefoot living while retaining its organic, unpolished character.
Is Hickory stable enough for installation over radiant heat?
Yes. Hickory is an inherently dense and resilient species. While it lacks the century-long natural seasoning of our reclaimed lines, we achieve excellent dimensional stability through our precision kiln-drying process. By calibrating the lumber to a consistent 8-10% moisture content in our Virginia shop, we ensure these solid 3/4″ planks are prepared for the thermal demands of radiant heating environments.
However, any bespoke integration requires site-specific expertise. Determining whether our specific plank widths and your unique heating system are a perfect architectural match is a critical judgment call that must be made by the onsite architect or professional builder. We have supplied many successful radiant heat projects, but final responsibility for total environmental control—including proper subfloor preparation, humidity monitoring, and system temperature regulation—always rests with your specialized installation team.
Can I get these planks wider than the standard 12"?
Possibly. While our standard Tongue & Groove profile runs up to 12″ wide, we are one of the few mills capable of producing “butt joint” square-edge planks in widths ranging from 12″ to 18″. These massive widths offer a rare architectural scale that is ideal for grand entries or expansive modern floor plans seeking a truly “custom” aesthetic. Availability is limited in the wider planks so please contact us to go over details of your project.
What type of finish and installation do you recommend?
For the best results, we always recommend that installation and finishing be performed by a professional familiar with wide-plank solid wood. All projects should strictly follow National Wood Flooring Association (NWFA) guidelines regarding acclimation, subfloors, and fastening. For finishing, we suggest consulting with a specialist to find a product that highlights the natural mineral streaks and grain without creating an artificial sheen.
About how much does it cost to ship flooring to my job site?
Freight costs vary depending on the size of your specific order, the exact delivery location, and current carrier fuel surcharges. As a general baseline, you can budget approximately $0.75 per square foot for Mid-Atlantic shipments, and $1.25 per square foot for West Coast deliveries.
Because freight rates fluctuate and every job site is unique, these numbers are strictly ballparks. To get a perfectly accurate shipping rate, we highly recommend calling us or filling out a Quote Request, and our team will calculate the exact logistics for your project.
Are your shipping quotes firm, or will costs change after I order?
We pride ourselves on providing firm shipping quotes upfront directly on your Sales Order, and we work hard to ensure there are no “surprise” surcharges after the fact.
On rare occasions, we may need to re-quote a delivery due to unusual circumstances—such as sudden spikes in carrier fuel surcharges or new information regarding your specific delivery site details. If this ever happens, we prioritize complete transparency and will communicate with you immediately so you are always fully informed about your project’s budget.

Our Virginia Mill Shop
Precision Milling, Master’s Touch.
When it comes to premium architectural design, a rustic aesthetic should never mean rough around the edges. Our state-of-the-art molders may supply the raw power required to mill this dense rustic hickory, but it is the careful human element—seen here as Jason expertly dials in the machinery—that elevates each board into a true masterpiece.
I was very pleased with the congenial sales staff and their patience in discussing the product and wood flooring in general. Delivery was just as we discussed and the wood is beautiful. I especially like the long and wide boards.

Stephen was very helpful, friendly and professional. It has been an all around very positive experience. He has been great to work with – very helpful and accommodating with pricing, delivery instructions, and care. The product speaks for itself – quality, character and richness. We first put it into our pool house about 2 years ago and ever since then, we’ve been anxious to do the main house – which we are doing now and we just love it.
