Modern Heritage, Rooted in History.
Milled in our Virginia mill shop, these wide-plank floors begin their journey in the timber frames of 19th-century American landmarks. We pair historical soul with modern technical precision to create a foundation that is as durable as it is storied. This is more than a surface — it is an enduring legacy designed to mature alongside your home.

The Reclaimed Oak Collection
Unmatched Durability, Historic Patina
Sourced from the massive timber frames and sawmill lumber salvaged from 19th-century landmarks, our Reclaimed Oak blends storied provenance with unmatched structural stability. Every wide plank carries the rhythmic saw marks and deep-seated tannins of the wood that built America. It is a versatile architectural foundation, designed to mature alongside your home for generations to come.

The Ghost of the
American Forest.
Once the dominant “King of the Forest,” American Chestnut now exists only as a reclaimed treasure. Salvaged from early 20th-century structures, these rare planks feature the species’ signature “wormy” character and a warm, honey-toned patina. Choosing Chestnut is an act of preservation—a rare opportunity to ground your home in a finite piece of American history.
THE RECLAIMED HEART PINE COLLECTION
A Legacy of
Industrial Strength
Salvaged from the monumental factories and textile mills of the American Industrial Revolution, our Heart Pine is a testament to enduring performance. These old-growth timbers once provided the structural backbone for a nation’s expansion. Today, their intense resin content and deep amber glow create a dense, luminous foundation that infuses modern interiors with a warm, storied light.

The Future of a
Living Vitality
Beyond our reclaimed offerings, we celebrate the enduring vitality of our local landscape. This collection features wide-plank hardwoods sourced from the Appalachian mountains through responsible, regenerative forestry. By prioritizing local stewardship and precision milling in our Virginia shop, we provide a refined, clean-lined aesthetic that honors the forest’s future as much as its past.
THE BARN BOARD COLLECTION
A Study in
Virginia Vintage
We craft this collection by meticulously preserving the original aged “skin” of heritage timbers & rough cut lumber, capturing the most visceral expression of the wood’s past. From the rhythmic saw marks of our Barn Board Pine to the storied depth of our Thresher Oak, we precision-mill each plank to honor its authentic, skip-planed surface. This is a tactile foundation that invites a rugged, historical soul into the most refined modern spaces.
Our Virginia Mill Shop
Precision Milling, Master’s Eye.
Mass production relies on machines to make every decision, but we still trust the human eye. While our high-end molders ensure every plank fits with absolute technical precision, we never leave the final look to chance.
Under the meticulous oversight of our Master Builder, Jason Hochstetler, every single board is hand-graded in our Virginia shop to verify its structural integrity and unique patina. For projects requiring a truly bespoke character, we offer hand-scraped edges as a custom detail—a subtle, rhythmic touch that softens the transition between planks and anchors the room in a “modern heritage” aesthetic.

We enjoyed visiting with you and seeing your samples, but the barn-board oak and wormy oak were even better than the samples. We were totally delighted with it, and our builder and floor installer were equally impressed. We’ve had compliments from everyone who’s seen it. We love our floors! Appalachian Woods was a pleasure to do business with from beginning to end.

“Reclaimed timber is inherently unpredictable. The art of our business isn’t just in the milling, but in the curation. I work directly with our clients to calibrate the exact grade, cut, and patina required so that the floor doesn’t just look beautiful—it feels like it has always belonged there.”

The Details
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the difference between your Reclaimed collections and your Appalachian Hardwood collections?
The distinction lies in provenance, but the quality of milling is identical. Our Reclaimed collections are salvaged from 19th-century structures, offering intense, old-growth density and a historic patina that simply cannot be manufactured. Our Appalachian Hardwood collection features “new wood” sourced through responsible, regenerative forestry in our local region. This provides a refined, clean-lined aesthetic for modern spaces while honoring the future of the forest. Both lines are precision-milled in our Virginia shop to the same uncompromising architectural standards.
How long does it take to mill a custom floor?
Because every floor is hand-graded and custom-milled to order in our Virginia shop, our standard lead time is typically 4 to 6 weeks. For highly bespoke requests or extremely large architectural volumes, we will provide a specific timeline during your quote.
What plank lengths can I expect in an Appalachian Woods floor?
Mass-produced flooring is often chopped into ten-to-eighteen-inch segments simply to fit on a standard shipping pallet. The result is a choppy, distracting surface overwhelmed by seams. Because we mill entirely to order, we take the exact opposite approach: we maximize the length of the raw timber. While we do include a natural mix of two-to-three-foot boards to respect the yield of the wood, we push for the longest planks possible—frequently reaching up to 12 feet. This drastically reduces the number of seams in a room, creating the sweeping, cohesive visual flow that is the true hallmark of a luxury architectural surface.
How do you ensure the stability of such wide planks?
Wide-plank flooring requires rigorous technical oversight to prevent cupping or seasonal movement. Whether we are working with century-old antique oak or fresh Appalachian hickory, stability begins with our drying process. We meticulously air and kiln-dry our lumber to exact moisture tolerances. Furthermore, every board is hand-graded by our team to verify structural integrity before it ever passes through our molders.
Can I customize the texture or finish of my floor?
Absolutely. When you partner directly with our mill, you are never confined to a rigid, off-the-shelf catalog. We engineer extensive aesthetic customization across every collection we offer. For our reclaimed woods, you can choose to preserve the rugged, century-old saw marks or have the face precision-planed for a smooth, refined elegance. For our Appalachian hardwoods, we can introduce bespoke tactile details—such as meticulously hand-scraped edges that evoke a “modern heritage” character, or a wire-brushed face that creates a stunning, durable raised-grain texture you can actually feel underfoot. Finally, while our floors are traditionally engineered for a high-end, on-site finish—allowing your installer to perfect the final tone in your home’s specific natural light—we absolutely offer custom pre-finishing options. Just reach out to our team to discuss the exact vision for your space.
Are your floors environmentally responsible and safe for indoor air quality?
Absolutely. Our Reclaimed collections are 100% post-consumer recycled material, which actively prevents deforestation and contributes to LEED certification points. Our Appalachian Hardwood line relies on strict, sustainable regional forestry. For the final installation, we always guide our builders and homeowners toward high-performance, low-VOC (Volatile Organic Compound) finishes to ensure the indoor air quality of your home remains pristine and healthy.
About how much does it cost to ship flooring to my job site?
Freight costs vary depending on the size of your specific order, the exact delivery location, and current carrier fuel surcharges. As a general baseline, you can budget approximately $0.75 per square foot for Mid-Atlantic shipments, and $1.25 per square foot for West Coast deliveries.
Because freight rates fluctuate and every job site is unique, these numbers are strictly ballparks. To get a perfectly accurate shipping rate, we highly recommend calling us or filling out a Quote Request, and our team will calculate the exact logistics for your project.
Are your shipping quotes firm, or will costs change after I order?
We pride ourselves on providing firm shipping quotes upfront directly on your Sales Order, and we work hard to ensure there are no “surprise” surcharges after the fact.
On rare occasions, we may need to re-quote a delivery due to unusual circumstances—such as sudden spikes in carrier fuel surcharges or new information regarding your specific delivery site details. If this ever happens, we prioritize complete transparency and will communicate with you immediately so you are always fully informed about your project’s budget.
